Rumahku Sayang

Now is a Good Time, 2020

Bali, Seminyak

Rumahku Sayang was part of Now Is A Good Time held at Uma Seminyak. It is an exhibition of artwork that reveals the artists varied personal relationships with mental and physical disabilities. Developed from a four-month collaboration between differently-abled artists, observations about society, family and themselves are presented, and the audience is invited to participate in the conversation.

Rumahku Sayang is the exploration of poetic and imaginative spaces that create joy, safety and security. The installation by Mary Bernadette Lee attempts to delve into Tamimi’s mindscape, and along with it the various nuances of transition in his evolution as a son, a brother, a friend, and most importantly, a person. Mary Bernadette Lee approaches disability by analysing the support systems offered by family and one's own consciousness in her mixed-media installation with Tamimi Pohan.

The installation spans their five-month journey of art-making during which Mary introduced various exercises to Tamimi as a way of exploring identity, self and ideas of home. Journeying these spaces allowed Tamimi to understand and see himself in a new light. He brought newfound energy to the relations with the people close to him, as well as to his own self-perception and imagined narratives.

Rumahku Sayang traverses this recent past, reminisces the older past, celebrates the present and projects hope into the future. It is an encapsulation of a young man’s growing sense of belonging to the worlds he sees.
