Arising

Power Records, 2016

Kult Gallery, Singapore

Paul McCartney wrote 'Blackbird' in the 60s when the civil rights movement peaked. Just as he used a blackbird as a symbol for the female oppressed, the blackbird in 'Arising' is purely symbolic. It is a significant symbol to remind us to claim back our control and power in the freedom of choice. In these choices, we rise above our fears and difficulties.

Arising also translates into a metaphor for coming into deeper consciousness, transcending time, space and circumstances. Even if there is darkness, your wings are broken and your eyes sunken, you should always choose to try to arise and fly into the lightest light in the darkest dark.

In there, you shall find your strongest vulnerable self.

Arising was part of Power Records, a group exhibition organised by Kult to celebrate music from the 60s to the 80s.
